How To Keep Mice Out of Your House

October 29, 2022

When the weather turns colder, mice look for warm places to live.

Humanely getting rid of mice can be a daunting task, but there are a few simple methods that you can use to get them gone for good.

If you are scared of mice remember this, they really are more scared of you than you are of them. Mice do not like open spaces so if you see one scurrying away, try to stay calm and follow its path.

Mice are like little Houdini’s! Adult mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime! Keep this in mind when you are sealing cracks and crevices in your house.

Here are our top tips for keeping mice out of your home.

  • Check all windows, doors, as well as cracks and crevices around the house. Remember, mice can fit into a space the size of a dime.
  • Use a good sealant and/or repellent to fill the cracks and holes. Be sure to check the foundation, gaps around door and window frames and any openings around plumbing. Once you have sealed all the entry points,
  • Be sure to keep your home clean and free of food and water dishes that could be attractive to a mouse.
  • Make sure that your food is stored in airtight containers and never left out where mice could get to it. This includes putting away all leftovers and cleaning up any spilled food.
  • Keep your home clean and free of clutter. Mice are afraid of open spaces, so keeping your home as organized as possible will make it difficult for them to live there.
  • If you have children, be sure to install a mouse-proof baby gate at the entrance to the room where they spend the most time.  Next, try using mice repellent outside and around the house. There are many different products on the market, so be sure to find one that is safe for both you and your pets.

Research has shown that mice activity decreases in the presence of household pets.

If you are considering adopting an animal from a shelter, we recommend checking out King Street Cats in Alexandria Virginia.

For dog adoptions, check out one of the many animal shelters in the Greater Washington D.C. Baltimore area.

Finally, we recommend not using mouse glue traps as they are inhumane. The mouse becomes stuck on the trap and then slowly starves to death or dies of dehydration.
