Takoma Park is a small (2.4 square miles), independent city of about 18,000 residents straddling the Montgomery County/Prince George's County line, adjacent to the DC border. Founded in 1883 by developer Benjamin Franklin Gilbert as a streetcar suburb elevated above the mosquito-plagued lowlands ofWashington, Takoma Park has evolved into one of the most distinctive and progressively minded communities in the metro area. It is known nationally as a'nuclear-free zone,' as a sanctuary city, and for its exceptional collection of late Victorian and early 20th-century architecture — Queen Annes, ColonialRevivals, and Craftsman bungalows preserved on tree-lined streets.
Takoma Park has an extraordinarily vibrant community culture —independent bookstores, folk music, farmers markets, arts organizations, and community activism define the city's character. It is one of the most walkable communities in Montgomery County, with the Metro, commercial strips, schools, and parks all accessible on foot or bicycle.

• Takoma Park Historic District (National Register): Takoma Park history — The oldest section of the city contains over 600 contributing historic buildings dating from the 1880s–1930s, making it one of the most significant late-Victorian residential districts in Maryland.
• Gilbert's founding vision (1883): Takoma Park history — Gilbert's original streetcar suburb was designed to provide healthy elevation above DC's malarial lowlands while offering quick rail access to the city — an early model for suburban planning.
• Takoma Park Farmers Market (est. 1983): TP FarmersMarket — One of the longest-running and best-loved farmers markets in the metro area, held every Sunday year-round.
• The Old Takoma Business District: Old Takoma— The historic commercial district along Carroll Ave features independentshops, restaurants, and galleries in preserved early-20th-century storefronts.
