Columbia is one of the most famous planned communities in American history, conceived by visionary developer James Rouse and built from scratch beginning in 1967. Situated in Howard County halfway between Baltimore and Washington D.C. along US-29, Columbia consists of ten self-contained 'villages,' each with its own village center, schools, pools, and community facilities, all connected by an extraordinary system of pathways and open space. The community was designed from the outset to be racially and economically integrated a radical vision for its era that has shaped Columbia's enduring character.
Today Columbia is home to over 105,000 residents across its villages: Wilde Lake, Harper's Choice, Oakland Mills, Town Center, Owen Brown, Long Reach, Hickory Ridge, Kings Contrivance, River Hill, and Dorsey's Search.The Town Center is anchored by the Merriweather Post Pavilion (one of the nation's great outdoor music venues), the lakefront Mall in Columbia, and a growing collection of restaurants and cultural institutions.
